Rebuild, redesign, or leave it alone?

Not every tired website needs a full rebuild. Use this checklist to decide redesign, rebuild, or wait.

Old sites gather opinions. “It feels dated.” “It is slow.” “Nobody enquires.” Those are different problems. They need different levels of work.

Here is a calm way to choose: leave it, redesign, or rebuild.

Leave it alone (for now)

Honest reasons to wait:

  • The site is clear, fast enough, and leads arrive steadily
  • Your offer or name is about to change — building now means rebuilding soon
  • You do not have content, photos, or decisions ready Leaving it alone is not neglect if you are gathering the inputs a good project needs.

Redesign

A redesign keeps the bones: URL structure, CMS, and roughly the same pages. You change layout, type, components, and often performance polish.

Choose redesign when:

  • The sitemap still matches how you sell
  • Content is mostly right; presentation is not
  • The stack is maintainable and not fighting you every week Redesign is the right tool for “it looks tired” without “the whole model is wrong.”

Rebuild

A rebuild replaces structure, stack, or both. New information architecture, new templates, often a cleaner foundation for search and speed.

Choose rebuild when:

  • People cannot find what you sell
  • Mobile is broken in ways CSS patches will not fix
  • The CMS fights every update
  • You are changing business model (brochure → services, or services → shop)
  • Search and technical debt are stacked high Rebuilds cost more. They also stop you paying forever for a foundation that was wrong.

A five-point checklist

Score each 1–5 (1 = fine, 5 = painful):

  1. Clarity — can a stranger say what you do in ten seconds?
  2. Action — is the next step obvious on every key page?
  3. Speed — does it feel instant on a phone connection?
  4. Maintenance — can you change a page without fear?
  5. Fit — does the structure match how you sell today?
  • Mostly 1–2: leave it; fix copy and a few pages
  • Mostly 3 with good structure: redesign
  • Several 4–5, especially fit and maintenance: rebuild

Do not decide from a moodboard alone

Pretty references are useful later. First decide the level of change. Moodboards without a diagnosis produce expensive sameness.

What to do next

Walk the checklist once, honestly. Write one paragraph: leave / redesign / rebuild, and why.

If you want a studio read on that paragraph, send it over. We will tell you if we agree — and what a first version should include.
